When the error occurs with you first thing you have to try is to hold the Power Button until your PC turns off. After that, press the power button to turn on the PC. If the blank screen appears no more, you can use the PC without any barrier. 

On the other hand, if the blank screen appears again, you will have to apply some fixes one by one. Moreover, you have to enable Safe Mode to apply these fixes.

Enabling Safe Mode from the black screen is quite different from the other execution. I will write the process step by step below. 

Step 1

Firstly, you have to enter the Windows Recovery Environment (winRE). To do so, you need to hold the power button for at least 10 seconds. After the PC turns off, you have to hit the power button again to turn on it.

Then again, you have to hold the power button for 10 seconds to turn off the PC. Then turn it on.

You have to repeat the action three times in a row. Accordingly, you will enter the winRE. 

Step 2

From the winRE interface, you have to choose the ‘Troubleshoot’ category.

Step 3

Next, click on the ‘Advanced options’.

Step 4

You will see several options including the ‘Startup Settings’ under the ‘Advanced options’. Press the mouse left button on it.

Step 5

Consequently, an interface will appear on the screen with some commands you need to apply. From here, you have to press ‘4’ or ‘f4’ to enable Safe Mode

Step 6

Finally, you need to click on the ‘Restart’ option from the newly appeared ‘Startup Settings’ interface to enter Safe Mode.

I would like to remind you that you have to enter Safe Mode each time to apply the fixes one by one. Therefore, let’s explore the possible fixes of the black screen error.

7 fixes to recover from the error

After entering Safe Mode, you will have at least 7 fixes in hand to resolve the error. You may need to apply them one after another in case one can’t fix it. Here take a glimpse at the list first-

  • Fix 1: Run Windows Update Troubleshooter
  • Fix 2: Uninstall Recent Windows Update
  • Fix 3: Restart SoftwareDistribution
  • Fix 4: Customize App Readiness Service settings
  • Fix 5: Run DISM Command
  • Fix 6: Run SFC Scan
  • Fix 7: Block Windows Automatic Update

Fix 1: Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

First thing first, you need to run the Windows Update troubleshooter while facing the error. It will help you to diagnose the possible cause with possible suggestions. I will include the process below.

Step 1

Tap the Windows and ‘I’ keys together. Accordingly, the ‘Settings’ window will be visible. Scroll down to the bottom and click on the ‘Update & Security’ category. 

Step 2

Next, you have to choose the ‘Troubleshoot’ section from the left side menu. 

Step 3

After that, look at the right side and choose the ‘Additional troubleshooters’.

Step 4

Consequently, you will get several troubleshooters in a line. You have to click on ‘Windows Update’. Then the ‘Run the troubleshooter’ option will become evident. You have to click on it to execute the operation. 

Step 5

Here the troubleshooting process will take several seconds to complete. In the end, you will get a fixing suggestion. You can apply the findings manually or leave it to do automatically.

Finally, restart the PC. If you still face the black screen error, you will need to apply the next fix.  

Here I would like to remind you that you have to enable Safe Mode again and again before applying any fix. 

Fix 2: Uninstall Recent Windows Update

As the Windows Update will be one of the main reasons, uninstalling the recent update can help you recover from the error. The uninstalling process will be given below.

Step 1

Tap the Windows key and type ‘control panel’. Accordingly, the ‘Control Panel’ app preface will appear on the top. You have to click on it.

Step 2

Consequently, you will get the app window on the screen. Here you need to select ‘Category’ as a ‘View by’ option. You will see it on the top right side. And find the ‘Uninstall a program’ option under the ‘Programs’ category. You have to click on it.

Step 3

After that, look at the left side top. You will see a couple of options. ‘View installed updates’ will be one of them. Select it.

Step 4

As a result, you will find the recent update list in the middlebox. Choose the latest Windows update from the list. Right-click on the chosen option. Then you will get the ‘Uninstall’ option. Tap on it and confirm the execution.

Finally, you have to restart the PC. Probably, the error will disturb you no more. Somehow it may still exist. In that case, you need to apply the other fixes.

Fix 3: Restart SoftwareDistribution Folder

A corrupted ‘SoftwareDistribution’ folder can be responsible for appearing the error. In this case, you have to restart the folder. To do so, you need to delete the folder first. Then start it. I will disclose the process below.

Step 1

Tap the Windows key and type ‘cmd’. Accordingly, you will see the ‘Command Prompt’ preface on the top upper side. You have to select ‘Run as administrator’ from the appeared command list.

Step 2

Consequently, the ‘Administrator: Command Prompt’ window will become evident. You have to copy the below command texts and paste them into the window one by one. Here, you have to press ‘enter’ button each time after inputting one command.

‘net stop wuauserv’

‘net stop bits’

‘net stop cryptSvc’

‘net stop msiserver’

Step 3

Next, open the ‘File Explorer’ folder. Then copy the below path and paste it into the address bar. 

‘C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution’

Then hit the ‘enter’ button.

Step 4

As a result, the ‘SoftwareDistribuion’ folder will appear on the screen. Tap the ‘ctrl’ and ‘A’ keys together to select the entire file and folder. Then click on the ‘Delete’ option. You will find the option upper side menu bar.

Step 5

Again you have to open the ‘Administrator: Command Prompt’ window. Then copy the below commands and paste them one by one. You have to hit the ‘enter’ button each time you paste a single command.

‘net start wuauserv’

‘net start bits’

‘net start cryptSvc’

‘net start msiserver’

Finally, the ‘SoftwareDistribution’ folder will restart completely. In the end, you need to restart the PC and check out the existence of the error.

Fix 4: Customize App Readiness Service settings

Yet, you couldn’t solve the error. Don’t worry. In this fix, I will attach another one that has a top-solving record. Let’s explore it.

Step 1

Tap the Windows and ‘R’ keys together. Accordingly, the ‘Run’ window will appear on the left bottom. You have to type ‘services.msc’ into the ‘Open’ box and click on the ‘Ok’.

Step 2 

Consequently, you will get the ‘Services’ window on the screen. You have to find the ‘App Readiness’ from the service list. Hopefully, you will find it easily from the list because the list will accommodate alphabetically. 

Step 3

While finding the option, right-click on it. Then select ‘Properties’ from the appeared command list. 

Step 4

As a result, the properties interface will become evident. Look at the middle of it to find the ‘Startup type’ section. From here, you have to choose the ‘Automatic’ option. In the end, click on ‘Apply’ and ‘Ok’ then. 

Finally, you have to restart the computer. In case you still face the error, you will not need to worry. There will be a couple of other options to resolve it.

Fix 5: Run SFC scan

Run the SFC scan is the most common process to solve any Windows System error. I will explain the process in detail below.

Step 1

Here you have to work with the ‘Command Prompt’ again. To do so, you need to follow the same way as you would do in fix no. 3.

To recap, press the Windows key and type ‘cmd’. Consequently, you will see the ‘Command Prompt’ preface in the top right corner.

Step 2

Next, the ‘Administrator: Command Prompt’ window will appear on the screen. You have to copy the below command text and paste it into the window. You can also type the command directly into the window.

‘SFC /scannow’

Then hit the ‘enter’ button. Accordingly, the process will start and check the Windows System file. It will also repair the finding issue. You have to wait for several seconds to complete the process. 

After completing the process, you need to restart the PC. Finally, follow up on the existence of the black screen error. If it exists, you may need to run the DISM command.

Fix 6: Run DISM command

The fix will be another possible way to resolve the black screen error. You need to follow the below steps to apply the fix.

Step 1

Again, you have to access the administrator power of the ‘Command Prompt’ window to run the DISM command. 

Step 2

While the window will appear on the screen, you need to copy the below command and paste it into the window. 

‘DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth’

Then you have to press the ‘enter’ key. It will take some time to complete the operation.

Step 3

After completing the operation, you will get a confirmation. Then you have to copy the below command and paste it into the window to restore health.

‘DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth’

Then hit the ‘enter’. It will take some time to complete the operation. In the end, close the ‘Command Prompt’ window and restart the computer.  

Fix 7: Block Automatic Windows Update 

Block automatic Windows Update may not be possible directly, but you can pause it for a specific period. Sometimes it can fix the discussed error. You need to follow a couple of steps to pause automatic windows updates. 

Step 1

Tap the Windows and ‘I’ keys together. Accordingly, the ‘Settings’ interface will become evident. From here, you have to select the ‘Update & Security’ category.

Step 2

Then choose the ‘Windows Update’ section from the left side menu. 

Step 3

Next, look at the right side of the appeared interface. You have to find and click on the ‘Advanced options’.

Step 4

As a result, you will see some advanced update options. ‘Pause updates’ will be one of them. You will see the ‘Pause until’ option under it. Here you need to select a listed date.

After that, restart the computer. Hopefully, you will get rid of the black screen error.
