Worried!

Your PC prompts that the amount of system memory has changed.

In the beginning, I would like to ensure you that the error message is not a big deal to be worried about. In fact, it’s nothing but a change indication. In the entire article, I will compile all possible internal and external fixes with the causes hiding behind the error.

the amount of system memory has changed

Causes Behind the Error Message

The error happens most of the time because of the change in the amount of RAM on the PC.

Suppose, you have used 4 GB RAM on your PC. Now you add another 4 GB RAM. Relatively you start the PC for the first time after adding extra RAM and get the error message on your computer screen.

It can also happen if you decrease the amount of RAM instead of increasing it.

What to Do if ‘the Amount of System Memory Has Changed’

In general, the error message might be like, ‘The amount of system memory has changed. Press F1 to continue or F2 to load default values. In most cases, the problem has been solved by tapping the ‘f1’ key. But if the error message still prompts after tapping the key, you will need to follow the below fixes one by one.

Fix 1: Disable ‘SupportAssist OS Recovery’ From BIOS

If the error message prompts on the screen each time you open the PC. The first thing you can try is to disable ‘SupportAssist OS Recovery’ from BIOS. I will describe it below.

N.B. the process may be different for different computer manufacturers. Here I take DELL as a sample.

Step 1

Firstly you have to get access to the BIOS menu. For that, you need to shut down the PC. Then switch on the power button and start tapping ‘f2’ key one and one.

Step 2

Consequently, the BIOS (Basic Input Output Device) menu will appear. Tap the ‘Advanced’ tab and scroll down to find out the ‘SupportAssist System Resolution’ section. You need to select it and hit the ‘enter’ key.

Step 3

Next, you will see the ‘SupportAssist OS Recovery’ option. You have to ensure that the option remains disabled.

Step 4

After that, tap the ‘f10’ key. The command will save and exit from the BIOS menu. It also restarts the PC.

Finally, check the error. If you still get the error message, you can follow the next fix.

Fix 2: Run Hardware Diagnostic

Here are the steps to follow to run Hardware Diagnostic–

Step 1: Shut down your PC first to apply the fix.

Step 2: While the PC will turn off, you have to press the power button and start tapping the ‘F12’.

As a result, you will acquire access to run a hardware diagnostic. If the PC confronts any hardware error, the process will notify you. Then, you need to take action according to the finding.

Fix 3: Reseat RAM

The error is mostly related to RAM. So, reseating RAM can be the best option to fix the error. Here are the steps to follow –

Step 1: To reseat RAM, you need to remove the back cover of your PC. You need to be aware that the process will be easy to apply.

Step 2: While removing the back cover, you will find the RAM locking with clips inside the slot.

Step 3: You need to unlock the clips by tapping them and removing RAM from the slot.

Step 4: After that, you have to reseat RAM into the slot again.

Step 5: Then screw up the back cover.

Step 6: Finally, tap the power button of your PC and check the existence of the error.

Hopefully, you won’t get the error message anymore.

Final Words

Therefore, if the amount of system memory has changed, reseat the RAM can be an obvious solution. But I would like to recommend you to follow the software-related fixes firstly because hardware fixing might have a slight bit of risk.
