But, you need to update Windows by any means. So, what can you do right now?

I am going to define the question for you. That’s why I will compile several fixes that you can apply to update Windows from this situation. You will also get the acknowledgment about the reasons behind this happening. Let’s explore.

Why Does the Message Appear?

It is a Windows Update-related issue. There are a couple of reasons having behind it. It may be interrupted while downloading or installing the update. System file corruption can be a matter too. Rare, but happen that the Windows Update component may be corrupted. Another reason can be an outdated Intel Graphics driver.

What to Do While ‘A Current Driver On Your PC May Be Better’

Whatever the reason is, the message is a very common appearance while trying to update Windows manually. In this case, many users left the PC to update Windows automatically. But, it is an issue that will need to be solved for better performance of Windows. So, you need to update Windows by any means. 

Here I will include several fixes to set free from the appeared message. Before diving into the deep. let’s have a glimpse at the list first. 

  • Fix 1: Run Windows Update Troubleshooter
  • Fix 2: Update Network Adapter Driver
  • Fix 3: Uninstall the Device
  • Fix 4: Update Intel Graphics Driver
  • Fix 5: Reset the Windows Update Component
  • Fix 6: Restart Windows Update Service

Fix 1: Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

While facing the issue, the first thing you can try will run Windows Update Troubleshooter. In many cases, it has solved the issue. I will attach the process step by step below.

Step 1

Tap the Windows and ‘I’ keys together. Accordingly, you will get the ‘Settings’ window access. Then you have to find the ‘Update & Security’ category and select it.

Step 2

After that, you need to select the ‘Troubleshoot’ section from the left side menu. 

Step 3

Next, look at the right side. From here, you have to find the ‘Additional troubleshooters’ option. While finding the option, click on it. 

Step 4

Consequently, the troubleshooters’ list will appear on the screen. Here, you have to select ‘Windows Update’. Accordingly, you will get the ‘Run the troubleshooter’ option just below. You have to click on it.

As a result, troubleshooting will start. It may take several seconds to finish the diagnosis. At the end of the operation, you will get possible suggestions to fix the finding. You can apply them manually or automatically. 

Finally, restart the computer after applying the suggestions and try to update windows. If the message appears again, you will need to follow the next fix.

Fix 2: Update Network Adapter Driver

A network adapter can be a reason to create the issue. In this case, you will solve it by updating the network adapter driver. You can follow the below steps to update the driver.

Step 1

Right-click on the ‘Start’ menu. Select ‘Device Manager’ from the appeared list. 

Step 2

Consequently, the ‘Device Manager’ window will become evident. You have to find the ‘Network adapters’ from here. While finding, expand it.

Step 3

After that, you need to right-click on the related adapter from the list. Then, you have to click on ‘Update driver’

Step 4

Accordingly, a new interface will appear on the screen. Here you will get two options. I would recommend you to choose ‘Browse my computer for drivers’.

Step 5

Next, you have to click on the ‘Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer’ section. You will find it at the bottom of the newly appeared interface.

Step 6

Then choose the device driver you want to update and press ‘Next’

Step 7

At the end of the driver update, you will get a confirmation.

Finally, try to update windows. If you still get the message, you will need to uninstall the network adapter. I will discuss the process in the next fix. 

Fix 3: Uninstall the Device

To apply the fix, you need to follow the first two steps from the previous fix. 

While the network adapter list will be visible, you have to right-click on the recently updated device. 

Accordingly, a list with a couple of operational options will appear. You have to click on the ‘Uninstall device’ option from the appeared list. In the end, you need to confirm the operation. After that, the process will take some time to complete. 

If you do not able to update windows, you may apply a couple of other fixes too.

Fix 4: Update Intel Graphics Driver

An outdated intel graphics driver can create the issue. So, you may need to update the driver. I will include the process in detail below. 

Step 1

Firstly, open a browser and search ‘update intel graphics driver’ on google. Then select the ‘Download Intel Drivers and Software’ renamed link.

Step 2

As a result, you will enter the desired web link. Here you will find the ‘Automatically Update Your Drivers’ section. You have to click on ‘Get started’ from here.

Step 3

Consequently, a download option of ‘Intel Driver & Support Assistant (Intel DSA)’ will appear. You have to click on the ‘Download now’ option.

Step 4

Here it will take only a couple of seconds to download the file. After completing the download, look at the left bottom just upper the ‘Task bar’. Click on the ‘.exe’ file.

Step 5

Tick mark on the ‘agree to the license terms and conditions’ box and click on the ‘Install’ tab then.

Step 6

After that, you have to tap the ‘Accept’ option to continue the installation.

Step 7

The installation process will take some time to complete. Here two possible things may happen. One will demand the ‘Launch now’ option and the other will be the ‘Restart’. You need to select the option depending on on-screen appearance. 

Step 8

After restarting the PC, the available update will appear on the new tab of the existing browser. Click on the ‘Download’ option. It will take a couple of minutes to download the update.

Step 9 

While completing the download, you need to click on the ‘Install’ option. It may take several minutes to complete the graphics driver update process. 

Finally, check the issue. If you are still unable to update windows, you will need to apply other fixes.

Fix 5: Reset the Windows Update Component

It will be a rare chance but could happen that the Windows Update component will be corrupted. In this case, you need to reset it. The process will be given below. 

Step 1

Tap the Windows key and type ‘cmd’. Accordingly, you will see the ‘Command Prompt’ app preface on the top of the interface. You have to click on ‘Run as administrator’.

Step 2

Consequently, the ‘Administrator: Command Prompt’ window will become evident on the screen. Then you have to copy the below commands one by one and press them into the appeared window. And you need to hit the ‘enter’ button each time you paste the one command. 

‘net stop bits’

‘net stop wuauserv’

‘net stop appidsvc’

‘net stop cryptsvc’

Here I would remind you that, you need to confirm the below submission by typing ‘Y’. I will not use an inverted comma here to make it easy for you because it has alreday an internal inverted comma.

Del “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\*.*”

From here, you should continue the process by following the same direction, which means copying the below commands one by one and pasting them into the window. Don’t forget to hit ‘enter’ each time you paste one command.

‘rmdir %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution /S /Q’

‘rmdir %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 /S /Q’

‘regsvr32.exe /s atl.dll’

‘regsvr32.exe /s urlmon.dll’

‘regsvr32.exe /s mshtml.dll’

‘netsh winsock reset’

‘netsh winsock reset proxy’

‘net start bits’

‘net start wuauserv’

‘net start appidsvc’

‘net start cryptsvc’

Finally, you will reach the end of resetting the Windows Update Component. In the end, you have to restart the PC. Then try to update Windows again. In some cases, it may not enough to update windows. In that situation, you will need to follow the next fix.

Fix 6: Restart Windows Update Service

You can fix the issue from the ‘Service’ setting. Here the process will be simple. You need to restart the Windows Update service. I will describe the process below. 

Step 1

Tap the Windows key and type ‘services’. Accordingly, you will see the ‘Services’ app preface on the top of the appeared interface. You have to click on the ‘Run as administrator’ from below the app preface.

Step 2

Consequently, the ‘Services’ window will become evident on the screen. You have to find the ‘Windows Update’ from the appeared services list. Then double-click on it.

Step 3

As a result, the ‘Windows Update Properties’ window will appear. Here you need to select ‘Automatic’ as a ‘Startup type’. Ensure the selection of the ‘Start’ tab. Then click on ‘Apply’ and ‘Ok’ at the end. 

Step 4

After that, right-click on the ‘Windows Update’ service again. You have to click on the ‘Restart’ option from the appeared operational list. It will take a couple of seconds to complete the restart process of the Windows Update Service. 

Finally, check the existence of the issue. Can you update Windows or not?

Fix 7: Run SFC and DISM Command

Run SFC (System File Checker) and DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) commands are the most common but useful fixes indeed. Here I will include the process in brief.

Step 1

Right-click on the ‘Start’ menu and select ‘Windows PowerShell (Admin)’ from the appeared list. 

Step 2

As a result, the ‘Windows PowerShell (Admin)’ window will appear on the screen after your confirmation. Then copy the below command text and paste it into the window.

‘sfc /scannow’

After that, hit the ‘enter’ key. It will take a couple of minutes to complete the scan. Once it would have finished, you have to close the Window.

Step 3

Again you need to open the ‘Windows PowerShell (Admin)’. Then copy the below command having inside the inverted comma and paste it into the window. 

‘Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth’

Then hit the ‘enter’ key. The process will take a couple of minutes to complete. After that, you have to restart the PC again. Finally, try to update Windows again. Somehow, if it prompts the same message, you will try the last possible fix.

Fix 8: Try Windows 10 Update Assistant

If none of the fixes is able to update Windows, you will have to use Windows 10 Update Assistant. You can follow the below processes to apply the fix to update Windows.

Step 1

Open a browser and type ‘windows 10 update assistant’ on the google search bar. Consequently, you will get a link direction to download the desired file. Enter on it.

Step 2

Then you will see the latest available Windows Update. Here you need to click on the ‘Update now’ option.  

Step 3 

It may take a few moments to download the ‘Windows 10 Update Assistant’ file. After completing the download, you have to click on the ‘.exe’ file that will appear on the left bottom just upper the ‘Task bar’ or you can get it on the ‘Download’ folder.

Step 4

After a while, the ‘Windows 10 Update Assistant’ window will appear on the screen. Click on the ‘Update Now’ tab to update windows through the Assistant.

Step 5

It will check CPU, Memory, and Disk Space whether these are compatible or not. After the checking, it will show the confirmation result. Then you can select the ‘Next’ tab or it will start within 10 seconds automatically. 

Step 6

The process will start then. It will take several minutes to complete the download and install. You have to wait until it finishes. Here you need to follow the on-screen direction to complete the process.

Final Words

Before ending, I would like to remind you that after applying most of the fixes, a restart will be must needed operation. Here, it can execute by default, or you may need to execute it manually. So, don’t feel awkward restarting the PC one and one.
