dump file creation failed due to error during dump creation

Why Does the Error Occur?

The blue screen error may occur for various types of reasons. It’s important to acknowledge the possible causes to cure it properly. Here I compile some of the reasons-

  • Dump file creation can fail because of third-party cleanup software interruption. If so, you need to remove the software to fix the error.
  • System file corruption is another reason for occurring the error. In this case, you need to scan DISM or SFC to fix the error.
  • If the BIOS (Basic Input Output Device) is outdated, the error may occur so. Here you have to download the latest BIOS update and replace it.

These are the possible reasons behind the occurrence of the error. If you face an error, you will need to fix it first to use the PC smoothly.

But how can you fix it? You will get the answer from the following section.

What to Do if Dump File Creation Failed Due to Error During Dump Creation

Failing to create a Dump file doesn’t mean it is unsolvable. Here I will exclude all possible fixes details for you. Before diving into the deep, let’s have a glimpse at the fixes list first.

  • Fix 1: Uninstall the Cleanup Software
  • Fix 2: Run chkdsk
  • Fix 3: SFC Scan
  • Fix 4: DISM Scan
  • Fix 5: Customize Registry Editor
  • Fix 6: Turn Off ‘Automatically Restart’ option
  • Fix 7: Apply ‘Complete memory dump’
  • Fix 8: Alternate the RAM Slots
  • Fix 9: Update BIOS
  • Fix 10: Reinstall Windows

Fix 1: Uninstall the Cleanup Software

While the blue screen error disturbs you, first of all, you need to uninstall the cleanup software if you have any. The uninstallation process will be given below.

Step 1

Firstly, tap the Windows and ‘R’ keys together. Consequently, the ‘Run’ window will appear on the left-bottom of the screen. You need to type ‘appwiz.cpl’ into the ‘Open’ box. Then click on the ‘Ok’.

Step 2

As a result, you will see the ‘Programs and Features’ interface. From here, you can uninstall the installed cleanup software.

To do so, find the software and right-click on it. Accordingly, you will get the ‘Uninstall’ option. You have to choose it to complete the process.

After that, check the error. Will it still exist or not? If yes, you will need to try the other fixes.

Fix 2: Run chkdsk

The problem may hide inside the drive where the operating system has installed. So, you will need to run ‘chkdsk’ to solve the problem. Here I include the process step by step.

Step 1

Tap the Windows key and type ‘cmd’. Accordingly, the ‘Command Prompt’ preface will be visible on the screen. From here, you have to select ‘Run as administrator’

Step 2

As a result, you will get the ‘Command Prompt’ window on the screen. You have to copy the below text and paste it into the window.

chkdsk C: /f’

After that, you have to hit the ‘enter’ button. Then wait for a while to complete the process.

Finally, check the error. Will it happen with you again or not? If this happens, you need to move to the next fix.

Fix 3: SFC Scan

To solve the system file corruption, you have to run the SFC scan through the Command Prompt. Here I will give the scan process below.

Step 1

Again you should take the ‘Command Prompt’ administrative access. You can follow the same way of step 1 in the previous fix.

Step 2

After getting the ‘Command Prompt’ accessibility, you have to copy the following text and paste it into the window.

‘sfc /scannow’

After that, you have to hit the ‘enter’ button to execute the scan.

While the process finishes, you need to restart the PC and observe the error visibility. In case you still suffer, you can follow the next fix.

Fix 4: DISM scan

Whenever the SFC Scan could not fix the error, you need to run the DISM scan consequently. To do so, you can follow the below steps.

Step 1

It will be another time to work with ‘Command Prompt’. To do so, press the Windows key and type ‘cmd’ and click on the ‘Run as administrator’.

Step 2

Consequently, the ‘Command Prompt’ window will become evident. You have to copy the below command and paste it into the appeared window.

‘DISM.exe /On-line /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth’

Then tap the ‘enter’.

Step 3

After completing the scan, you have to restore health. Here, you need to copy the below text and paste it into the window.

‘DISM.exe /On-line /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth’

In the end, you need to wait for a while to complete the DISM scan.

Finally, restart the PC and check the existence of the error. If it still exists somehow, you can apply a couple of fixes.

Fix 5: Customize Registry Editor

If none of the scan processes recover the error, the next fix will be Registry Editor customization. You need to follow some chronological steps to apply the fix.

Step 1

Firstly, tap the Windows and ‘R’ keys together. Then type ‘regedit’ into the ‘Open’ box. In the end, you have to press ‘Ok’.

Step 2

Consequently, the ‘Registry Editor’ window will be visible. You need to copy the below location command and paste it into the address bar.

‘Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl’

Then hit the ‘enter’ key.

Step 3

Next, look at the right box. You have to right-click on the blank space. Expand the ‘New’ and choose the ‘DWORD (32-bit) Value’ to create a new one.

Step 4

Here you have to rename it as ‘DisplayParameters’. Then click on it to edit the ‘Value data’. Make it ‘1’ and press the ‘Ok’ to end the process.

Finally, close the ‘Registry Editor’ and restart the PC. If somehow you still suffer from the error, you will have some other options to apply.

Fix 6: Turn Off ‘Automatically Restart’ option

Another possible solution to the dump file creation failed error will be to turn off the ‘Automatically Restart’ option. Here I brief the total process step by step.

Step 1

Right-click on the ‘This PC’ and select ‘Properties’ from the newly appeared extension.

Step 2

Then look at the right side. From here, you will find the ‘Advanced system settings’ section. You have to click on it.

Step 3

As a result, the ‘System Properties’ window will appear on the screen. Here, you will see ‘Startup and Recovery’ section. You have to choose the ‘Settings’ tab from here.

Step 4

From the newly appeared interface, you will see the ‘System failure’ section that contains the ‘Automatically restart’ option. You have to remove the checkmark to turn off the function.

Then restart your computer. Hopefully, the error will vanish. In case not, you can apply another related fix.

Fix 7: Apply ‘Complete memory dump’

You need to change another ‘Startup and Recovery’ setting to apply the fix.

Firstly, you need to follow step 1 to step 3 from the previous fix.

While the ‘Startup and Recovery’ interface will become evident, look at the bottom of it. From here, you have to choose the ‘Complete memory dump’ as the ‘Write debugging information’ option.

The process will require a restart of your PC. After that, check the existence of the described error.

If system settings changes don’t fix the error, you will need to try some external fixes.

Fix 8: Alternate the RAM Slots

In some cases, RAM (Random Access Memory) can be an issue for occurring the error. If you suffer from the error after applying the previous fixes, a DIY base simple hardware fix can help you fix the error.

To apply the fix, you have to alternate the RAM slots. This fix may give you magical relief from the error.

Fix 9: Update BIOS

Sometimes the error may occur for outdated BIOS. In this case, you need to update BIOS to fix the error. I will include the BIOS update process step by step below.

Step 1

Firstly, you need to download the available BIOS update from the manufacturer’s official website.

Step 2

Then, you must unzip the downloaded file and copy it to an external USB flash drive.

Step 3

After that, you have to enter the BIOS. To do so, restart the PC and tap the manufacturer’s specified key. It may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Step 4

In the end, replace the outdated BIOS with the newly downloaded BIOS update.

Finally, you need to check the existence of the error again. If still, the PC faces the problem, you will need to reinstall the Windows.

Fix 10: Reinstall Windows

If none of the software and hardware fixes succeed, you will have to reinstall the windows at the end. Here I will brief the reinstall process below.

Step 1

Hit the Windows and ‘I’ keys together. Accordingly, the ‘Settings’ interface will become evident. You have to scroll down and find the ‘Update & Security’ section. While finding it, you have to select the section.

Step 2

Then look at the left side menu bar. Here you will see the ‘Recovery’ option. Click on it.

Step 3

After that, you need to look at the right side. Here, you will see the ‘Get started’ option under the ‘Reset this PC’. You have to click on it.

Step 4

Consequently, a new interface will be visible. You need to choose either the ‘Keep my files’ or the ‘Remove everything’ option from here. ‘Remove everything’ will be my recommendation for you.

Step 5

In this step, you need to choose an option from where you would like to reinstall Windows. ‘Local reinstall’ is a common choice here.

Step 6

Confirm the ‘Additional settings’ and click on the ‘Next’ tab.

Step 7

At this stage, you have to tap the ‘Reset’ tab to confirm the process execution. It may take several times to complete the reinstallation.

Finally, you will successfully finish the Windows reinstallation.

Final Words

Therefore, I would like to recommend you apply fix no. 8 at the beginning. In most cases, it will help you. In contrast, you need to apply fix no. 1 if any third-party cleanup software is installed. You rarely need to apply fix no. 10. Other fixes can be applied in a row according to your need.

Hopefully, you will not face ‘Event 161, volmgr’ error with the message ‘Dump file creation failed due to error during dump creation’ anymore.
