Tried to sign in to Windows 10 through Windows Hello, but you couldn’t. At the same time, you confront an error message saying Windows Hello is preventing some options from being shown.

Sometimes Windows Hello wouldn’t work as you face the error. It is not an impossible happening. Many other Windows 10 users like you face the issue so. 

However, the error is solvable and you can solve it by yourself. To do so, you need to follow this entire article. You will get all the possible options to resolve the error from here. Let’s explore.

Why the Error ‘Windows Hello Is Preventing Some Options’ Occurs

The discussed error may occur for a couple of reasons. These are-

• System corruption may be the basic reason. So, you need the help of a related troubleshooter. Even you may need to update Windows and device driver.

• Sometimes Windows Hello is being corrupted. In this case, you have to reset the feature to resolve the error.

• The error may occur for the required Domain PIN logon. Here, you have to allow it from the Registry Editor.

• Disable the ‘Turn on convenience PIN sign-in’ setting can be a reason too. If you relate the error to this reason, you will have to enable the setting feature. 

What to Do If Windows Hello Is Preventing Some Options

Whatever the reason is, the error is fixable. In fact, I will attach all processes in detail in this entire article. Before looking at the details, let’s have a glimpse at the list first.

Fix 1: Run ‘Hardware and Devices’ Troubleshooter

You can resolve the error by running the ‘Hardware and Devices’ troubleshoot. Here is a reminder that you may not get the troubleshooter from the ‘Settings’. To assist you, I will attach the full application process below.

Step 1

Right-click on the Start menu. Then find and click on the ‘Windows PowerShell (Admin)’ option from the appeared list. 

Step 2

Accordingly, you will get the ‘Windows PowerShell (Admin)’ window access. You have to copy the below command and paste it into the window.

msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic

Then hit the ‘enter’.

Step 3

As a result, the ‘Hardware and Devices’ troubleshooter will appear on the screen. Here, you have to press the ‘Next’ tab to start the troubleshooting.

Step 4

It will take some time to detect the problem. 

Step 5

The troubleshooter diagnoses the problem and gives you a suggestion of what to do next. You may apply the fix consequently or skip to continue troubleshooting. I would like to recommend you choose the ‘Skip this fix’ option.

Step 6

When troubleshooting is completed, you will get a notification with the detection. Close the troubleshooter and take an initiative to fix the finding. 

If no problem is found, you will need to follow the below fixes one after another until they succeed.

Fix 2: Check for Available Windows Update

As an element of the sensible move, you can check for available Windows updates. It may get rid of the error. You need to apply the following steps to do so.

Step 1

Tap the Windows and ‘I’ keys together. Accordingly, you get the ‘Settings’ window access. From here, you have to choose the ‘Update & Security’ category. 

Step 2

Next, select the ‘Windows Update’ tab from the left side menu of the following interface.

Step 3

Then look at the right side portion. Here you will find a ‘Check for updates’ tab. Click on it to check the available Windows update. If any update requires, you will need to download and install it.

Finally, inspect the issue. If it appears again, you will need to move to the next fix. 

Fix 3: Update Biometric Devices Driver

The device by which you log on to the PC is needed to update to resolve the error. I will attach the update process below.

Step 1

Right-click on the Start menu first. Then choose the ‘Device Manager’ from the appeared list. 

Step 2

Accordingly, you will get the ‘Device Manager‘ access. From here, you have to expand the ‘Biometric Devices’. 

Step 3

Right-click on the related device option. Then click on the ‘Update driver’ option. As a result, the update process will start. You just have to follow the on-screen direction to complete the process successfully. 

If the fix does not relate to the condition, you will have to move to the next fix.

Fix 4: Reset Windows Hello

If Windows Hello is corrupted somehow, you may need to reset the feature. To reset it, first, you have to remove it from the PC and then set it up again. The process will be given below.

Step 1

Tap the Windows and ‘I’ keys together. Accordingly, the ‘Settings’ window will appear. From here, you have to click on the ‘Accounts’ category. 

Step 2

Then select the ‘Sign-in options’ from the left side menu. 

Step 3

Look at the right side portion. You will get the ‘Windows Hello’ option here. Click on it. Consequently, you will see the ‘Remove’ option. You have to click on it. 

Here you may get the individual option for face, fingerprint, and pin.

When the removing process is completed, you will have to restart the PC.

Step 4

Again you have to follow step 1 & 2. Then you will see the  ‘Set up’ of Windows Hello. Click on it and follow the on-screen direction to complete the set-up process.  

Finally, recheck the existence of the issue. If it does not vanish, you will follow the next couple of fixes.

Fix 5: Allow Domain PIN Logon

Windows Hello requires the Domain PIN logon. If you don’t allow it, the discussed error may occur. For so, you have to apply the following steps. 

Step 1

Tap the Windows and ‘R’ keys together. Accordingly, the ‘Run’ will appear on the screen. Type ‘regedit’ into the ‘Open’ bar. Then press ‘Ok’. 

Step 2

Consequently, you will get the ‘Registry Editor’ window access. You have to copy the below direction and past it into the address bar of the appeared window.

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System

Then hit the ‘enter’. 

Step 3

Select the ‘System’ key and look at the right portion. Here right-click on the blank space. Then expand the ‘New’. Next, click on ‘DWORD (32-bit) Value’ to create a new one. In the end, rename the ‘Value’ as ‘AllowDomainPINLogon’.

Step 4

Double click on the newly created ‘AllowDomainPINLogon’ value. Put ‘1’ to the ‘Value data’ box. Select ‘Hexadecimal’ as ‘Base’. Then press ‘Ok’ to confirm the submission. 

Finally, restart the computer and try to use Windows Hello without facing the discussed error. If you fail again, you will have one more option to apply.

Fix 6: Enable ‘Turn on convenience PIN sign-in’ Setting

Another important thing according to the error resolution will enable the Turn on convenience PIN sign-in setting. I will attach the enabling process below. 

Step 1

Again, open the ‘Run’ window. To do so, tap the Windows and ‘R’ keys together. Then type ‘gpedit.msc’ into the ‘Open’ box. Click on the ‘Ok’ tab then. 

Step 2

Consequently, the ‘Local Group Policy Editor’ window will appear on the screen. From here, you have to follow some chronological steps. 

Firstly, expand the ‘Computer Configuration’. 

Step 3

Secondly, expand the ‘Administrative Templates’ from the appeared list under the ‘Computer Configuration’.

Step 4

Thirdly, find out the ‘System’ option from the ‘Administrative Templates’ list. Then expand it.

Step 5

Finally, you have to find ‘Logon’ as a consequent action from under the ‘System’ section. Then click on the ‘Logon’ and look at the right side pane. Here you will see the ‘Turn on convenience PIN sign-in’ setting. Double click on it. 

Step 6

As a result, the ‘Turn on convenience PIN sign-in’ window will appear. From here, you have to tick the ‘Enabled’ circle. Then click on ‘Apply’ and ‘Ok’ at the end. 

Close it and the ‘Local Group Policy Editor’ window as well. Then restart your PC. 

Hopefully, the discussed issue will not appear anymore.
