‘Chkdsk’ is a Windows command that checks the current disc for finding the error. But, it requires special access that you have to close all other functions to check the disk.

Methods of Fixing “Chkdsk Cannot Run Because The Volume Is in Use”

Generally, Chkdsk is used to find out the error of the alike ‘C:’ disc where people install the operating system. It happens that you might close all the programs, but still, the Chkdsk can not run because a couple of inner applications are active to collaborate the operating system. 

So, if the Chkdsk can not run, you need to fix it. You have two basic individual fixes to run Chkdsk. These are- 

Fix 1

You can run Chkdsk by saying yes to restart the computer. There are some steps you need to conduct after failing to run Chkdsk. Let have a check 

Step 1

Firstly, you have to get access to the ‘cmd‘. You would start the process by pressing the Windows key and the ‘R‘ key together. 

Step 2

After appearing in the ‘Run‘ interface on the screen, you would type cmd on the box. Then, you have to press the keys ‘crtl‘, ‘shift’ & ‘enter‘ altogether instead of clicking ‘ok‘.

Step 3

In this step, an interface will be appeared with granting access permission that you need to allow. After that, you will get the prompt window.

Step 4

You have to type ‘chkdsk C: /r /x’ command in the prompt. Then you would press ‘enter‘.

Step 5

Here you will see the notification that- ‘Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.’ 

At the very next, the prompt will ask you a question that- ‘Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)’. 

Step 6

In this step, you need to answer the question. If you want to allow Chkdsk to run automatically, You need to type ‘Y’ command on the prompt

Step 7

After typing ‘Y‘ and pressing ‘enter‘, you will get a message that- ‘This volume will be checked the next time the system restarts.’ It means Chkdsk will run for the current volume automatically the next time when the computer restart.

Step 8

Finally, the Chkdsk can run automatically after restarting your computer. 

Fix 2

There is an alternate process to run Chkdsk successfully. To do that, you have to follow some steps.

Step 1

Firstly, you would press the Windows key and ‘I’ key together to work with the settings.

Step 2

Several categories will appear in the interface. You have to choose ‘Update & Security from the entire categories.

Step 3

Here you will see the ‘Recovery‘ option on the left bottom. I would ask you to select it.

Step 4

Next, you will find the ‘Advanced startup‘ option on the right bottom. There will be the ‘Restart now‘ option. You have to press it.

Step 5

A blue-colored interface having ‘Choose an option‘ will appear on the screen. You need to select the ‘Troubleshoot‘ option from here.

Step 6

Inside the ‘Troubleshoot‘ option, you will find the ‘Advanced option’ section. You have to enter into it.

Step 7

There will be several categories inside the ‘Advanced options. The ‘Command Prompt‘ might be one of them. 

Step 8

In this step, you need to work with ‘Command Prompt‘. You have to choose an account and input the password.

Step 9

Here, you would type the command- ‘chkdsk C: /r /x’ in the prompt and press ‘enter‘.

Step 10

Finally, the Chkdsk can run. After that, you will see ‘Choose an option in the interface. You have to click on ‘Continue‘ to use the computer again.
